Today we are going to learn a trick to finish the armbar from the mount by Chris Downing. He is a black belt and instructor at Alliance Pennsylvania located in West Chester, Pennsylvania. I just completed a seminar here, we had a great turnout and learned a lot.
Chris is going to show us one of his favorite techniques which is a trick to finish the armbar from the mount.
I have seen this position before. It’s not my favorite position, however it’s very effective. I’ve seen it done successfully in competitions at the highest level. He has some great details regarding this position. Let’s see how he does it.
He starts with the mount. When he goes for the armbar with S-mount his opponent usually hides his hand under his other bicep. This is a common defense against the armbar.
When his opponent does this Chris takes his other hand that has under-hooked his opponent’s arm and he grips the elbow of his opponent’s opposite arm.
Now he shifts his weight almost like he is squatting on top of his opponent. He continues to turn until he gets to the other side of his opponent. At the same time, he brings his arm around and traps his opponent’s other wrist and he sits back to finish the armbar.
This is a nice way to keep your opponent off guard and guessing because Chris has the option of attacking either side when his opponent is hiding his arm under his bicep.
I think this position is so effective because when he goes to the armbar normally I have time to hide my hand under my bicep. However, when he switches to the other side I’m not expecting that. I don’t have time to switch my other hand under my bicep to defend. So he catches my arm and finishes the armbar. He starts the armbar on one side then attacks the other side.
I really like this position. I used to do it a lot when I was a purple belt, I don’t know why I don’t use it much anymore. However, after seeing how effective it is I should probably implement it into my game again.
Here is the breakdown of the key points regarding a trick to finish the armbar from the mount by Chris Downing:
- He starts with the mount and he attempts an S-mount armbar. His opponent usually hides his hand under his bicep to defend against the armbar.
- He takes his hand that is controlling the arm and he grips the elbow of his opponent’s opposite arm.
- Now he shifts his weight almost like he is squatting on his opponent and Chris continues to turn to the other side. At the same time, he brings his other arm around to attack the opposite wrist of his opponent.
- He finishes the armbar by sitting back.
