Premier BJJ Training in Bedford, MA | Bernardo Faria Academy

Today, I want to talk about a question I hear a lot and that is, did you deserve the belt promotion? Many times after belt promotion ceremonies, I hear students questioning whether they deserved the new belt.
Usually, it happens with the students who don’t have as much confidence or maybe they are shy. They don’t feel that they deserved the belt promotion. They may feel hesitant to roll with the lower belts because they feel that they have to prove something after the new promotion.
I believe you should trust your instructor. If your instructor gave you a new belt, then it’s because you earned and deserved it.
When you get a new belt, it doesn’t mean that you have to be some really tough guy. You don’t have to prove to anyone that you deserved the new belt promotion.
A belt promotion means that you know jiu-jitsu and that you know the techniques for that belt level. It means that you are respectful to your training partners and instructors.
I don’t think any instructor would promote a student who wasn’t respectful to training partners.

A belt promotion also means that you are committed to training. Even if you are a really tough grappler, but you don’t train consistently, then it will be hard to be promoted.
If you commit to training and you train consistently then you should be very proud of your new belt promotion. Your instructor realizes that you are committing your time to bjj training.

Here is the breakdown for the key points of the question, did you deserve the belt promotion:

  1. A new belt promotion means that you are committed to jiu-jitsu training. You have attained the technical level for that belt, and you are respectful to your training partners and your instructors.
  2. You are becoming an example for the other students to follow. For example, if you get a new blue belt then you are an example for a white belt.
  3. Don’t worry about being the tough guy now that you have a new belt. If you have a new blue belt and a white belt beats you, then don’t worry about it. Jiu-jitsu is about much more than winning or losing in the academy.

Jiu-jitsu is about sharing the techniques, sharing the learning, sharing the teaching, sharing with your training partners and making the time on the mats enjoyable.
Try to keep your ego away and just enjoy your training time.
Keep enjoying jiu-jitsu and be proud of yourself for getting a new belt. Also, remember that you deserve your new belt. You have my congratulations and now you can focus on the next belt.
If you got your black belt then keep going, it’s a new beginning.
I hope this tip has helped you. Be confident in yourself in life and in your jiu-jitsu game. Try to help the lower belts and be an example for them to follow. Oss.
