Premier BJJ Training in Bedford, MA | Bernardo Faria Academy

Today we are going to see the best way to get out of the x-guard by Isaque Bahiense. He is 21 years old and the new promising star from Alliance in Sao Paulo. He recently received his black belt from Fabio Gurgel. Last year he won the Worlds as a brown belt in the middleweight division. He also got second in the open class. As a black belt, he has already won many competitions, including the Copa Podia, where he tapped out a multiple times world champion. He recently competed in the PanAms where he lost in the finals.

The Alliance academy has produced some of the best x-guard grapplers in the history of jiu-jitsu, including Marcelo Garcia, Lucas Lepri, and Bruno Malfacine. The x-guard is a very good position for controlling and sweeping your opponent. The x-guard and the single leg x-guard are easy to get into from any position. They allow you to control your opponent’s balance. There are many sweeps, transitions, and submissions that come from these positions.
Therefore, it’s important that we have some knowledge of escapes from this position. For this reason, I have asked Isaque, who is visiting us at Marcelo Garcia’s Academy, to show us the best way to get out of the x-guard. This is one of his best moves. Every time I train with him or watch him compete I notice how good he is at escaping from his opponent’s positions.
Let’s see how he does it.

When Isaque’s opponent has him in the x-guard, he grips his opponent’s collar and closes his knees tightly. This gives him a strong, solid base. When his opponent uses the x-guard to stretch him out, he transfers his weight to the leg that is closest to his opponent’s head. This allows him to circle and pass his other foot over his opponent’s knee and he steps that foot down between his opponent’s legs.
Then he puts his knee on his opponent’s chest and he controls his nearest ankle to prevent him from recovering guard. He is now able to completely pass the x-guard and establish side control.
This is a very interesting position for me. In my case, I don’t like to be stuck in the x-guard. I feel off balance and that I will get swept. That’s why I prefer to pass from my knees. However, this is a very effective and simple technique to escape from this position.

Here is the breakdown of the key points for the best way to get out of the x-guard by Isaque Bahiense:

  1. Once his opponent has the x-guard, Isaque creates a strong base. He does this by controlling his opponent’s collar and he closes his knees tightly.
  2. When his opponent stretches him out with the x-guard, he transfers his weight to his leg that is closest to his opponent’s head.
  3. When he transfers his weight, he is able to circle and pass his other foot over his opponent’s knee and then step down between his legs.
  4. Next he puts his knee on his opponent’s chest and controls his ankle. Now his opponent is unable to recover guard and he can establish side control.

Thank you very much for this awesome technique Isaque. I hope you all enjoyed it. Oss.
