How To Visit BJJ Schools When Traveling
If you are constantly traveling, you do not have to miss out on training Jiu-Jitsu. No matter where you travel to, there is probably a BJJ school nearby. You can use the fact that BJJ is so popular to your advantage to get good training in while away from your school. If you are traveling around a lot, then you need to be able to train while doing so. Otherwise, you are missing out far too much when away. There are some helpful things you can do to find a nice, temporary place to go to for Jiu Jitsu when away.
The first thing I would do is research on what schools are going to be near where you are traveling to. Sometimes, you can get lucky and find many good schools near where you are staying. Other times, there might only be one or two. Either way, do some online research for this. You can take a look at the schools online by their websites and social media pages. You might even get to see some reviews on the school as well. Pick the a place that is friendly and inviting, where there is no ego to be found. Find out who the instructor is, and once again, research. You can see kind of what to expect. The most important part, should be a school with good and friendly environment.

Let them know that you train Jiu-Jitsu, where do you train, and how many days you are planning to stay there. In this first visiting, you might be able to feel how is the environment of that school. If its not friendly, don’t insist, just leave because it might not get better. Normally if the instructor is a nice guy, the students will be the same. That’s why it is very important to try to feel how the instructor is. I can say by my own experience visiting over 100 schools that 99% of the times, when the instructor is a good person, the students are good too.
Also, there is actually a solid benefits from training while you travel. When you train at school that you are not from, you will be able to learn from a different teacher and will pick up some good ideas or techniques from that person. It is interesting to get to see different teaching styles in the art. The other benefit is that you will get to spar against people that do not know your game. Back at your home school, people are able to roll with you and possibly slow down or stop your game because they roll with you all the time. At a school with new people, you will get to try your game against a different variety of people, which is helpful for your Jiu-Jitsu.
If you have the chance to train, then you should. It will only be beneficial to you. If you don’t train when traveling, you are missing out on a great opportunity. Jiu-Jitsu is a community. You can always rely on your brothers and sisters in that community to get in some good training. The majority of schools will show you some wonderful hospitality. Enjoy that hospitality and the training.
I hope it has encouraged you, to train somewhere while you are traveling.
