Premier BJJ Training in Bedford, MA | Bernardo Faria Academy

Today I am here with Carl Masaro.  Carl is a third-degree black belt under Renzo Gracie.  He has been training bjj for a long time and has a school in New Jersey.  Carl is a super nice guy and today I asked him to show us one of his favorite position.  Carl loves to pass the butterfly guard.  Today he is going to show us his favorite butterfly guard pass in no gi.  He showed me the pass and I really like it, he has a lot of good details on it as well.  Recently I had some guys from Marcelo Garcia’s school come to my academy in Bedford, MA and they also showed some butterfly passes.  You can check those out as well! The video for Carl’s pass is below and then I will do a breakdown.

Breakdown of Butterfly Guard Pass by Carl Masaro:

So guys as you can see in the video above this is a pass that some of may have seen before but Carl has a great way of explaining all of the little and important details.  One of the most important things that he did was the fact that he did not telegraph.
For those that don’t know, telegraphing is when you hint to your opponent what you are going to do so they can prepare for it.  It is kind of like giving away your move.  Carl has his head on the wrong side until he is ready to jump over my butterfly hooks.  This makes me believe that he is going to pass one way and then at the last second, he will go to the other side.
This simple detail is very high level, this is because he does not want to give away his position.  Another thing that he does is use his forearm to stop my butterfly hook from following.  This is very important.  This is one of those things that is hard to see, and you have to feel.  When he demonstrated the move on me I could feel how much he is controlling my leg with his forearm.
Anyways guys this pass is very efficient and I have seen people use this at the highest levels of competition successfully.  I really hope you like it and use it.  Oss!
