Premier BJJ Training in Bedford, MA | Bernardo Faria Academy

Today I am here with Cesar Casamajo. Guys Cesar is a black belt from Brazil who is young and new as a black belt.  He is only 25 years old and he has a bright future ahead of him as a competitor.  Cesar has a very good butterfly guard and I asked him to show us some techniques today.  He is going to show us something he encounters a lot and how to deal with it.  When he plays the butterfly, a lot of guys can get the under hook but Cesar has a very good way of dealing with it.  Let’s watch the video below on how he deals with it and then I will do a breakdown.

Breakdown of Cesar Casamajo’s Butterfly Sweep Against the Under Hook:

So guys this was a very cool position that Cesar showed.  I used to train and teach at Marcelo Garcia’s academy in New York City.  In my opinion, Marcelo is the best butterfly sweep in the world.  Being at his school a lot of guys would play the butterfly guard, so I became good at defending this position.
When Cesar does it, it is very different.  One of the best parts of this sweep is the redirection.  Traditionally, we screen-shot-2016-12-01-at-6-47-41-pm   are taught to go to our side, Cesar likes to go overhead.  This is a very minor change that makes a major difference.  At first when he only traps the wrist and not the gi I thought maybe I could post, but since he goes over his head, it is very difficult to post.
Another important detail is to notice that he grabs the belt and uses it to pull me over him as he scoots under.  This is something that is hard to see, but Cesar actually is scooting himself very far underneath me so he can use his weight easily.  This is almost like a tomei nage from the butterfly.
Anyways guys I really hope you enjoyed this technique as much as I did.  Try it out in your training and see if it works for you! Oss!
