Premier BJJ Training in Bedford, MA | Bernardo Faria Academy

Today we are going to learn an arm drag from over-under pass by Lucas Lepri’s cousin Fred Silva. He is the assistant instructor here at Lucas’ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Fitness Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina.

I came here to train with Lucas and Fred to prepare for the Worlds 2017. Fred received his black belt from Lucas 5 months ago and he has excellent jiujitsu skills. He won the Brazilian Nationals as a brown belt.

He is going to show us one of his favorite techniques which is an arm drag from the over-under pass. The over-under pass is my favorite pass so I was interested to see how he counters it. He showed me all the details he uses and it is a very cool position.

Let’s see how he does it.

This technique comes when he is playing half-guard and his opponent tries for the over-under pass. Fred blocks his opponent’s head so it doesn’t go to the outside of his hip. If his opponent’s head reaches the outside of his hip then his opponent is in a very strong position to finish the over-under pass. After he has blocked his opponent’s head Fred’s other arm goes under his opponent’s armpit. Then he pendulums his leg and pulls his opponent’s arm for the arm drag. This forces his opponent to the mat.

Now he comes up and gets the seatbelt position. Then he pulls his opponent to the mat and establishes the seatbelt from the back. He already has 1 arm of his opponent trapped under his leg.

Now he opens his opponent’s collar to attack his neck. When his opponent grabs his wrist to defend, Fred grabs his opponent’s wrist and pushes his arm down to trap his opponent’s arm with his leg. To finish the submission, he goes to the rear naked choke.

This is a very cool technique. He knows this position very well. He knows if he lets my head get past his leg on the over-under pass that I will probably finish the pass. That’s why he blocks my head with his arm. Then he finds the gap between my arm and his leg. When he shoots his arm through the gap he takes advantage of the arm drag position. Now my arm is trapped and I’m in a very bad spot. Next, he pulls me to my side and he has my back with the seatbelt position. I’m in big trouble because 1 of my arms is already trapped. When I defend his collar choke with my free hand, he traps that hand and pushes my arm down and uses his leg to trap my arm. Now both of my arms are trapped under his legs. Now he finishes the rear naked choke.

Here is the breakdown of an arm drag from over-under pass by Lucas Lepri’s cousin Fred Silva:

  1. Fred starts in the half-guard but he makes sure to block his opponent’s head from getting to the outside when his opponent goes for the over-under pass.
  2. When he has blocked his opponent’s head, he shoots his other arm under his opponent’s armpit.
  3. He takes advantage of the arm drag position and forces his opponent to the mat.
  4. He comes up to the seatbelt position and pulls his opponent to his side. Now he has the seatbelt position from the back.
  5. He already has 1 of his opponent’s arms trapped under his leg, so he starts to set up the collar choke. When his opponent defends, Fred traps that hand and pushes his opponent’s arm down and traps it with his leg. Now Fred has both of his opponent’s arms trapped under his legs.
  6. To finish the submission, he goes straight to the rear naked choke.

I think this attack, just like most techniques in jiujitsu, is about timing because the over-under pass is a very good pass. Therefore, whoever has the better timing in this scenario will win this battle.

This is another example of a technique against one of my favorite positions, the over-under pass. I hope you all enjoyed an arm drag from over-under pass by Lucas Lepri’s cousin Fred Silva. Thank you so much Fred. Oss.
