A topic that people tend to ask me is what style of grappling works well to help their Jiu-Jitsu. The two that always come up are Wrestling and Judo. Both are important and work well with Jiu-Jitsu, making for a complete game with standing grappling and ground grappling. But which is right for you? It all depends on what kind of game you have.
For my personal style, I really like Wrestling. Because pressure passing is a big part of what I do, Wrestling flows right into that aspect of Jiu Jitsu. Wrestling is all about pressure. Creating pressure with your head position, hand fighting and takedowns. Many times, I can use a single leg to take my opponent down and go into my over/under pass. Also if you’re primarily a no gi grappler, then Wrestling will work well because it is all no gi as well. All the right grips and movements will work right along with your Jiu Jitsu.

Though I really enjoy Wrestling, Judo is also very important for Jiu Jitsu. If you mainly work in and compete in the gi, then Judo is essential for supplementing your Jiu Jitsu. By training in Judo, you will learn some important skills. It will teach you how to properly maintain and break various grips on the gi. Judo will also teach you how to control your opponents with grips and use one of the many effective takedowns in the art’s arsenal.
So, to choose which art to train will depend on what is important to you, and what will work for you personally. If you’re a no gi competitor or a person who uses a lot of constant pressure passing, then perhaps Wrestling is better for you. But if you’re learning and fighting in the gi, Judo will probably work better for you in the case. Either way, no matter what the style, you will help your Jiu Jitsu by doing this cross-training.
In the video below, my Wrestling Coach Jeff Marsh, from Edge Hoboken, shows the detail that completely changed my double legs. Double and Single legs, are probably my favorite moves in Wrestling, and also in BJJ, because most of my sweeps end up there, so this little detail was a game changing for me, because once I learned it, I started spending much less energy to finish the sweeps.
